Dietitian

I have been thinking about joining Taiwan Root’s medical missions for more than 2 years. I’ve never got to find someone to go with me. It’s not about being afraid of going alone, it’s about their regulated gather time. “Meet at the entrance of National Taiwan University at 2 AM.”, which made me feel like “just don’t know what to do?”

I think life is really short.  I probably will never take action if I don’t do it right now just because of this little fear factor backing me off. And I really miss the time when I was in college, going for medical missions with my mentors. So, I decided to go for sure!

Finally, it’s my turn after half a year
To join Taiwan Root’s medical mission is not that easy as you might think. I have waited at least half a year time. Because of the disaster happened in Haiti, most resources of Taiwan Root were assigned to the rescue mission to Haiti. Since there were not enough resources for the domestic mission, I got the chance to join the mission as an alternate position of the lists.

By the way, it really amazed me about registering Haiti rescue mission. In less than a day after posting the information on the web, there were 66 people grouped for this mission. The time frame for international mission is about 2 weeks or more.
Until now, I am still wondering…. those doctors, nurses, pharmacists don’t need to work? How did they come up with the vacations in such a short period of time? Or do they have anything else more important than making money?

2010/01/22 Meeting with Sister Fu
How exactly do I meet with other people at midnight? This mission trip was going to Xinguang, Yanglao, and Shilei in Jianshi Township of Hsinchu County, and Xuewunao in Fuxing Township of Taoyuan County. Those are first visited locations when Taiwan Root got started its first mission. I thought they could pick me up when the team arrived in Guanxi Rest Stop on Highway 2. But, general administrator Miss Fu told me that “We can’t stop at the rest stop since we might be fined with a ticket. Come stay at my house!” With that, I went to her house in Hsinpu of Hsinchu County, the person I have never met before.

Miss Fu is an NSP, working everyday till 8 or 9 pm. She is quite enthusiastic about medical mission even with her tight schedule. If you ask me if I am worried or afraid of going to stay in a stranger’s house, I would say “of course not!”

2010/01/23 Voluntary Team is not about having nothing else to do
Early morning at 4:30am, Miss Fu’s sister took us to Guanxi Interchange and waited for the team coming down from Taipei. Let me introduce my most admired “Changchun Team”, which is consisted of volunteers. They work with Taiwan Root for all the domestic mission trips. They offer their own cars, spend their own money to fix the car, be the drivers, pay for the fuels, and they even free up their own time and get together in the early morning for the mission.

They are not about having nothing else better to do. Instead, they have their own jobs or businesses. While all the people were sleeping in the cars, they were still awake and focus to make sure everyone reach the destination safely. They were so cool.

Still Xinguang’s amazing view
We arrived at Hsiuluan Elementary School in Hsinchu County at 7am in the morning. The sakura was so beautiful there. Everyone rest a little bit and headed to our first stop- Xinguang Elementary School.

I have been visited here before with a different purpose. Having different kind of feeling this time, the view was still beautiful. It was really cold here. The meals impressed me so much, too. I thought the meals here might be something like fry noodle. But, No! The chef was really awesome preparing more than 8 dishes sometimes, which I was so satisfied during the trip.

Taiwan Root is really something.  Besides “Moving Hospital”, you can also call it “Moving Kitchen”. They brought bowls, plates, containers, gas, refrigerators and etc. The weather was so cold in these days. We even had “Ma Yo Chicken Soup”, which warmed my heart so much.

The second visited place was Yanglao tribe, right beside “True Jesus Church”. There were not as many aboriginal people in the village, therefore less patients. But, there was one interesting thing happened: An old lady was coming for dental extraction. The dentist asked her to have the blood sugar test before making the decision. The old lady was afraid of having the blood sugar test instead of dental extraction.

The medical technologist was pretty frustrated and said “I was just going to use this little needle to prick on your little finger.” I think he might be thinking “Come on, dental extraction should be more terrifying.” Anyhow, the old lady came back for the blood sugar test later on. Aboriginal people are really cute.

It’s heaven with love
The third location we visited was Shilei Elementary School, which was also the place we stayed overnight. Since it was rainy and late when we arrived, there were not many patients. So, I got the chance to see aboriginal kids singing and dancing in the church. They seemed to be having the church activity rehearsal. Even though they were laughing and talking during the rehearsal, they were really talented in terms of beautiful voices and dancing.

The teacher said to everyone: I know you guys are playing. It’s okay as long as everyone is happy. But, you need to be serious by the time of real occasion. The last song they sang was called “Our Love”, which was very touching. The lyrics of this song: The place with love called Heaven. Really, these villages are heaven to me.

It was really cold and I insisted my “Four No Policy”-No shower, No face cleaning, No shampooing, No clothes changing. I went ahead to bed, but couldn’t sleep since the floor was freezing. So, I suggest everyone who uses sleeping bag to make sure using floor pad under it. That would make you sleep better.

Angels are around me
I still insisted my policy in the morning when I woke up. After breakfast, we headed to the final destination- Xuewunao tribe. This time the trip was quite relaxing because of the involvement of students from Hungkuang University. Without ladder, those students formed a pyramid to finish tiding Taiwan Root’s red flag. Young people are really energetic!

At the final visited location, we found a dog with wounded neck. A nurse couldn’t help but putting the medicine on the dog when other people helping to tempt the dog with food. Taiwan Root not just heals people, but also heals dogs.

A dietitian might not do too much in the medical team, but just helped out some routine registering work, kitchen stuff or some administrative jobs. But, I do like to provide my professions by educating the kids with some basic nutrition and health education while interacting with them in the activities.

Therefore, if you can bare the inconvenience of taking the shower and having good night sleep. You can still join Taiwan Root’s medical mission even if you are not medical professionals.

In fact, I felt that it’s really convenient living in the cities comparing with the villages overall. But, I am not sure who is more happy or fortunate. In the 2 days mission trips, having clouds floating in the air, I was feeling in heaven with angels around me.
