Sleeping Under the Sky of Der-Wen Village

The first meaningful thing I did since the arrival of the New Year was driving my Beetle under the night sky of the Der-Wen village. It was then and there that I experienced the heavy rains and starry nights which made me realize that God is good and that he treasures his people.

On January 8th at 5:30 in the morning, I drove my Beetle and met up with volunteers of the Taiwan Root Medical Peace Corps at the Tai-Chung fish market. We then departed for the free medical clinic at Ping-Dong. Among the passengers of my car, there was a dentist who was also a colleague from my hospital.

The early morning was chilly and cloudy.  As soon as we pulled onto the highway, the rain had started to pour. The rain came to a stop as we arrived at the suburbs of Ping-Dong. Good thing the group leader had waited for us or we have been separated from the group under the heavy rains.

At this mission trip, I was assigned to work with the kitchen crew; a job I took it seriously, since it carries the responsibility of keeping the volunteers energized, so that they’d be able to do their best.

The most memorable part of the trip was visiting the Der-Wen Village. The roads were poorly paved. It was a miracle that my Beetle (without four wheel drive capability and with its low structure) was able to push through. I was glad the weather was well during that period of time or the road might collapse again.

There was no running water when we arrived at the Der-Wen village. The water pipe had been severely damaged by a previous road collapse. The local residents gathered spring water from the mountains and utilized a temporary filter bed to filter the water. Water was very valuable in the village.

I was touched when an old lady kindly provided us with water for use of cooking knowing that our kitchen did not have access to water. Nevertheless, we knew how precious this water was to the local residents.

Although I am not medical profession and thus was unable to provide any medical aid, I was glad being able to contribute to the team whether it will be cooking for the volunteers, carrying the medical equipments, or just creating a positive atmosphere.  All these tasks might seem to be little, but my heart was so full of joyfulness.

At the end of the hard busy day I sat by the road by the Der-Wen community center and gazed into the stars. Did they always look this pretty? Or was this the reward for my hard work? The air was crispy and sweet. I took everything around me and drifted off to the symphony of the positive energy which I’d helped created.
