Taiwan Root Medical Peace Corps

Established in 1995 before Taiwan's National Health Insurance Program guaranted healthcare to all of Taiwan's citizens, Taiwan Root Medical Peace Corps' primary mission was to provide free medical services in Taiwan's mountainous regions.  With its wealth of practical experience, the organization was well-positioned to contribute to the international community.  As TRMPC founder, dentist Liu Chi-chun, has said, "Medical services should transcend national borders and exceed the limitations of politics, race, and religion."

Since TRMPC's first overseas team of 26 offered medical aid to Kosovar refugees in Macedonia in 1999, the organization has gone on to provide free medical care to isolated populations and victims of natural disaster in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America.  It estimates that its 6,000 volunteers have treated around 100,000 patients.

Taiwan Root gained international recognition and, in 2003, became the first Taiwanese NGO to be invited to participate fully in the Conference of Nongovernmental Organizations in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations.
